In this research paper it will address what the different generations are, the characteristics of the generations and interesting fact involving them. People born between mid-1940’s to the mid-1960’s are the Baby Boomers. They are the generation that changed the nature of society, and are associated with a rejection of traditional values. “Baby Boomer” is a term used to describe periods of very high birth rates. For example, the sharp increase that took place after World War Two. Increase of birth rates occurred essentially in Western Countries and around the same time. People did influence these actions, for example Elvis Presley and Jerry Lee brought black music to white audiences. Other people that influenced the Baby Boomers branch off were older people in large industries. Investors realized that they would make big money by targeting younger audiences to things like music. In result to this, children grew up accepting these new values (Black music). The Baby Boomer had such a significant impact on society because they were Work-centric. They are extremely hard-working individuals, they relish in working long hard weeks and they define themselves from their accomplishments. Baby Boomers are also very independent, confident and self-reliant. This generation grew up in a era that believed they can change the world. They questioned authority systems and began to ask to change in laws. The reason Baby Boomers are so influential is because they are a large population. They are such a large population because they didn’t go to war (like the past two generations did) and they faced fewer medical threats such as the influenza pandemic. Gen X usually includes people from the early 1980’s to 1882. They usually take up 44 to 50 million of the population. This generation marks the period of time where birth rates declined. Gen X composes of people of their 30’s and early 40’s, they are known as more diverse and better educated (more than 60% of Gen X attended college). Gen X is Individualistic; they came from an era of two-income families, rising divorce rates, and a faltering economy. As a result, Gen X has shown to be independent, resourceful, self-efficient, and they value freedom and responsibility. Gen X is also Technologically Adept; this population grew up with computers and technology. They are able to better adapt to the changing technology that is being put into law firms and corporate legal departments. Generation X is more comfortable using PDA’s, cell phones, email, laptops, Blackberry’s etc... Gen X is a very flexible generation. Many of these people lived through difficult times such as; the 1980’s where they saw their parents lose hard-earned jobs. This population is less committed to one company or firm. They adapt well to change and can tolerate alternate lifestyles. Gen X is determined and eager to accomplish things on their own terms. Lastly, Gen X values work and life balance.
