Althea Gibson Althea Gibson was born in South Carolina on August 25, 1927. At an early age, she developed a love of sport. Her great talent was in tennis, but in the 1940s and '50s, most tournaments were closed to African Americans. Gibson kept playing (and winning) until her skills could no longer be denied, and in 1951, she became the first African American to play at Wimbledon. Gibson won the women's singles and doubles at Wimbledon in 1957, and won the U.S. Open in 1958.

The Life of Michelle Kwan Not only is she is known for her grace and beauty on the ice, Michelle Kwan is also the most decorated figure skater in the history of the United States. I can remember being very young and completely mesmerized by her elegance on the ice. Furthermore, Kwan is known as one of the most inspirational Asian Americans of all time. The thirty-year old has won nine United States figure skating championships and four world titles, but her dream of Olympic gold has always eluded her. Still, Kwan has never allowed her shortfalls to define her career and despite never having won Olympic gold, she is widely considered to be one of the best and most decorated figure skaters of all-time.
Justyna Kowalczyk has had an everlasting positive impact on the Polish community worldwide. Ever since her first physical education teacher, competitions in flat racing and cyclo-cross, and playing basketball and hand ball, Kowalczyk has always had an itch for becoming the Champion of Polish Youth in sports. In years to come, she eventually won the first point of the World Cup in 2001, the bronze, silver and gold medals in Vancouver, and the first Polish athlete to win the free sprint technique after being ranked number two, against Marit Bjoergen. More recently, she has won the gold medal in Sochi, Russia in the 10-km run, classic-style. In all of these competitions, Justyna Kowalczyk proudly represented the country of her background: Poland.

Billie started playing tennis the following year at the age of 11 and played throughout her middle and high school years.
