Topic: Do Female Athletes Deserve Equal Pay? INTRODUCTION: The issue that I’m researching is about women’s sport and how they deserve to be payed equally with men. There are two sides of the issue. one is that women work just as hard as men do to be elite athletes and they play the same sports but they get payed less and the other is that men’s sport is in more of demand with television, sponsorship advertising etc, therefore men’s sport is more popular. This issue is personally relevant to me because when I’m older I hope to be an elite athlete and hopefully play in the WNBA and if I am lucky enough to get that opportunity I would like to be payed equally with the men in the NBA.

Elaine was proudly coached by Peter Burrows and Marylynn Gelderman throughout her amateur and professional career. She was one of the first woman to land many triple jumps in her programs. In fact, Elaine landed six triple jumps to win the world championship title in 1982(Ryan, Joan). In addition, Zayak was apart of the first trip to China by American Skaters for a competition. There was a Zayak rule, inacted at the 1982 ISU Congress, which states that many not perform the same kind of jump more than twice, and for it to be given full credit on both occasions, one of the two triples must be incorporated into a combination or sequence(Farris, JoAnn Schneider).
The distribution of rewards is unfair. Usually the men athletes are glorified and women athletes ignored in the mass media. Media images of modern women athletes tend to focus on feminine beauty and grace. The other area, technology, illustrates that men have a larger advantage too. Men create, program, and market.
Mental health for men is being called a silent crisis, a sleeper issue that has crept into the minds of millions. At the heart of the problem are new and emerging pressures for men, stemming from changes in societal dynamics at work, and in family and personal life. While the concept of mental health for men is nothing new, comparatively, gender-specific health awareness and research have focused predominately on women. Women have the tendency to band together, and they are more vocal and expressive about emotions and other aspects of their mental health. As a result, women seek health care in much greater proportion than men.

CHILD BEAUTY PAGEANTS The idea of Beauty Pageants started back in 1921 when the owner of an Atlantic City hotel thought of the idea in order to promote tourism. The winner of these contests would gain the title of Miss America, this has been a yearly event ever since. Then when the 1960’s came about pageants were becoming so popular that a ‘Little Miss America’ was started, originally open to 13 – 17 year olds but by the time 1964 came around there were over 35,000 participants which prompted an age division. Now a days children as young as two and three also participate. Beauty pageants as we know them today arisen in the late 1960’s in Miami, Florida.
This is an extremely sensitive subject for the current female athletes and female sport fans. There is a famous saying that I have heard which states, “Sports are played by men and therefore viewed by men.” An article from Sports Digest goes into detail about the adversity women battle with and has faced in the sports world. The first major step taken in the right direction was the implementation of Title IX in 1972. This allowed the same equal participation opportunities for women. Since some women don’t play certain sports such as ice hockey, wrestling, football, boxing, rugby, etc it gives women an opportunity to participate in other different sports.
This leads to hegemony, where the powerful remain in control. In today society, female sports do not get the recognition that men sports do in that they do not make the same amount of money, the same amount of respect, and the same amount of television coverage. Gender discrimination root comes from the interest and desires of society. Female athletes are frequently looked upon as not being as entertaining or lacking athleticism compared to male athletes.
