To what extent does the culture that exists in the Australian Defence Force—as described by the author of the following article—reflect contemporary Australian society? Gender relates to social roles in a society. It is what direction men and women should take through social expectations. The social roles are bordered by norms in a society where men and women act appropriately to their gender. Masculinity and femininity differ vastly in a society due to social construction, actions of men and women, and the social norms in a society and so on. ‘Pretending that such a sexist institution can bring ‘women’s rights’ to Afghanistan is a sickening piece of hypocrisy’ (Army’s rotten sexism: a product of training killers 2011). In addition, men that work in the army are exposed to violence, brutality, intense pain and witnessing of death very often. This may be the cause of the men acting in such barbaric ways as they need some sort of distraction of the problems that they may find difficult to face in the real world and turn to women as a form of amusement. Additionally, in modern societies, some women tend to expose themselves more due to their femininity. This can cause misunderstandings in a workplace and men may take this up as an invitation. The culture of the army is based on constant physical violence and mental cruelty of their enemies; this is probably where sexism evolved from as women are perceived as the weaker gender. It may be due to this that the environment in the army, women are exposed to discrimination by colleagues who are told to ‘suck it up’ when they are threatened by sexual violence.
