That morning, a little before eight o’clock, Damms drove his automobile to the vicinity in Milwaukee where he knew Mrs. Dams would take the bus to go to work. He saw her walking along the sidewalk, stopped, and induced her to enter the car by falsely stating that Mrs. Grant was ill and dying. They drove to Mrs. Grant’s home. Mrs. Damms then discovered that her mother was up and about and not seriously ill. Nevertheless, the two Damms remained there nearly two hours conversing and drinking coffee.
The cake that the wife bestowed upon him was small and glossy, but had a compelling meaning behind the wife’s loving gesture to the husband. The couple experienced hardships throughout their marriage, and the cake resembled a small gesture by the wife in attempt to mend the couple’s relationship. The candle denotes the last flicker of hope in their marriage. Once their candle burns out, the marriage would have reached its final stage, and they would face the inevitable. Brush uses the symbolism of the cake for the “Birthday Party” reader to draw his

I asked, “Hey, did you guys order the cake yet? Did you, did you?” He answered, “Well, if I tell you now I’ll ruin the surprise but if I don’t you’ll keep annoying me until I tell you, so I’ll just show you the cake.” He went to the refrigerator to take out the heart cake about sixteen inches long.
