Abstract Confidentiality, the duty to warn, and the duty to protect as ethical dilemmas that counselors and therapist face on a regular basis. Counselors and therapists have to ensure that the rights of their clients are protected, but they also have to adhere to certain laws and regulations that the states provide. The counselor or therapist has to make sure that they know when to report a serious offense such as child abuse or elderly abuse, when a client claims to want to kill someone, and when a client wants to commit suicide. When the counselor doesn’t report these cases, they leave themselves open to be prosecuted criminally for neglect. They have to know how when to report the cases, is there legitimate reason to believe that the client will do or has done harm to someone, or if they are talking out of frustration and anger.
Professional Counseling and Social Justice Abstract As a professional counselor, one must adhere to the competencies set forth and adopted by many of the professional organizations and associations that oversee counseling as a profession. The responsibility of upholding socially just practices is crucial for a professional counselor. Relationships are forged with individuals, families and groups which promote well-being in all aspects a participant’s life. A professional counselor must recognize his or her own biases towards societal, personal, religious and political topics or beliefs. Once these personal biases are recognized, the task of not relaying them to the individuals that have sought out assistance is vital to the success of their growth and achievement.
During this time, we will set short-term, long-term goals, and process goal to give us the direction of counseling and the purpose. There must be ongoing, meaningful evaluation of its useful purposes. Progress of my clients should be measurable and definable. During my interactions with clients, I must understand their feelings, behavior, and motivations so that I can help clients to identify any negative cognitive and behavioral patterns. As I fulfill my mission as a counselor, the therapeutic process must be given the time to work if the client is to achieve their personal goals and gain the necessary insight into their lives.
As I may discover issues, feelings and reactions as they arise in counseling, I would endeavor to be self-aware at all times, always ask myself, “What would Jesus do in the situation?” Self-knowledge is vitally important to ethical and effective counseling practice because the counselor must always have the client’s best interest in mind. Can Your Code of Ethics Be Wrong? Lonna Shelton-Soward Liberty University Abstract In counseling, whether Secular or Christian based it is crucial to understand and practice ethical codes. Similarities and differences in the American Counseling Association (ACA) code of ethics and the American Association of Christian Counseling (AACC) code of ethics, aim to do no harm. In the AACC Code of Ethics it clearly states, “Christian counselors acknowledge that the first rule of professional-ministerial ethical conduct is: do no harm to those served.” (AACC, Section, ES1-100, p.9). Counselors advocate change at all levels to improve the quality of life for individuals or groups, while eliminating obstacles that make it difficult to receive proper services.
Dr. Anderson displays a strong foundation of counseling through truth and having a relationship with Christ. Other web based articles were used to support the theory of Anderson’s book. Although the web based articles other different avenues of Christian counseling all of the sources used share a common root, how to show others how to overcome their problems to become healthy well adjusted individuals by using biblical concepts. Christian Counseling to the Spiritually Oppressed Discipleship is receiving instruction from a religious leader and being a follower who has learned to believe in the truth of the doctrine of his teacher. Psychology, Theology, and Spirituality in Christian Counseling Spring Browne Liberty University COUN-506 Summary Mark McMinn explains in his book, Psychology, Theology, and Spirituality in Christian Counseling, the progress that has been made by Christian counselors to unify the disciplines of theology and psychology. McMinn expresses the need for these disciplines for counselors and clients through addressing prayer, Scripture, sin, confession, forgiveness, and redemption. McMinn addresses each of these disciplines theologically and psychologically. McMinn has developed training methods and spiritual disciplines for people to gradually be transformed by God, evidence by reflecting humility, compassion, forgiveness, and redemption that can only be found through Christ (McMinn, 1996). Prayer is essential for Christian counseling.
An education is important so that you do not go beyond your scope of practice. You cannot help others without having the skills and the tools to help them. Experience and recovery does not qualify you to be a counselor. When a counselor has an education it shows in the way they perform, they must know skills like models, ethics, how to
