Asses the value of realist approaches to crime and deviance There are two kinds of realist approaches, both left realism and right realism are different and focus their analysis on different aspects but both have similar goals, which are to come up with ways to solve and lower the crime rates. Focusing on left realism, contemporary left wing approach, they have many good interesting aspects within their study. Young argues that since the1970s instability, insecurity and exclusion have increased unemployment and poverty these changes have contributed to the divorce rate increasing and new right policies have held back welfare spending on the poor, this has then contributed to the increase in marginalization and exclusion of those at the bottom creating a grater divide between the rich and poor which creates a sense of relative deprivation. Young also highlights that things such as the media promotes cultural inclusion and shows people what they should have in life (I pad, nice house ect) also there is now higher expectations for the “good life” also the poor are excluded from opportunities to gain the “glittering prizes” of wealthy society, this “dangles the carrot in front of their noses” which can then lead to crime such as theft as they take what they think they deserve. The deprivation isn’t just confined at the bottom but within middle class too, top footballers and fat cat bankers have ridicules wages and bonuses which most do not deserve, mc see the underclass as idle, living of undeserved benefits when they work hard every day to earn half of what they should be on this can lead do crime with in businesses (steeling). This analysis has great value as it outlines why people commit crime, the types of people doing it and their frustrations which is creating a wide spread divide amongst the class system which can then lead too riots such as the riots that
