Outline and assess feminist explanations of crime and deviance. Feminist views toward crime and deviance usually challenge the theories, concepts, methods and assumptions of most of the people already involved in the study of crime. They believe that in most condition men dominate the subject of crime and validate more on the male subject. Feminist essentially outline that most crime is caused by men as they appear to offend six or seven times more than a women and through figures such as self-report studies men are still the majority. Crime and deviance is an issue in society however due to women being socially controlled within the patriarchal society it means they are less like to commit crime and therefore have a lower rate. Heidensohn argues that women are controlled in three main areas and this explains why women are less likely to commit crime than men. Firstly they take on the role of a housewives which includes staying at home for majority of the day which decreases their opportunity to commit crime. Secondly the fear of crime makes women not want to be on the streets late at night so they prefer not to be. Lastly at work they are controlled by their bosses, and if their bosses are men this could lead to sexual/ verbal harassment and decrease their chance of promotion opportunities. These explanation may explain the low crime rate from women to some extent however through recent years the rate of women’s crime has increased which may show the social control over women is breaking down. Denscombes research shows that young women are taking on the role of delinquency due to becoming more confident which outlines that there may be a change throughout society if this continues to rise. Lombroso and Ferrero alleged that the diverse crimes committed by men and women are a result of their physical difference. This methodology has been used by different writers
