Introduction In matter of building ships, naval architects focus on two main points which are ship design and shipbuilding. Due to its relation to ship design, naval architects must understand properly about basic ship theory as well as ship’s characteristic. This essay will go on describing a ship including her design, history, function, main dimensions, destination, and features. This essay will describe a cruise liner named Asia Star (ex-Radisson Diamond) which used to be a cruise ship for approximately 13 years and ended up as a gambling ship in Hong Kong. Furthermore, this essay is written in order to complete the first coursework of Ship Design, given by the writers’ lecturer, Ir. Wasis Dwi Aryawan, M.Sc., Ph.D. The writers hope this essay will provide knowledge and understanding of ships, especially cruise ships for those who read it. And hopefully this essay will provide guidance for ship design subject to support the education process within the Department of Naval Architecture and Shipbuilding Engineering. Surabaya, 6th March 2012 Asia Star MV Asia Star is a cruise ship run by Asia Cruises. She is the only SWATH (Small Waterplane Area Twin Hull) cruise ship and the bigggest catamaran in the world. She is stationed in Hong Kong. She was formerly known as the Radisson Diamond, and built in Finland. She has 12 decks and 170 guest rooms, displacing over 11,500 tons when fully loaded. Named the Radisson Diamond, the ship was constructed by Finnyards and delivered in 1992. The Finnish owners decided to sell the ship in late 2004 to Hong Kong casino magnet, Stanley Ho, who listed the ship with Conning Shipping.
