We are all taught that lying is wrong. So is it ethically right for a doctor to perhaps not tell a bold-face lie, but to tell half-truths or decide to only tell the patient information as needed or as requested? Doctors need to weigh the mental state of the patient as well as their ability to comprehend the details of the diagnosis and prognosis. This is not an easy task for most doctors.
Why We Lie There are many reasons why people lie. Some have ulterior motives while others plainly lie with the sole intention of deceiving someone. In Ericson’s essay “ The Ways We Lie” she lists several examples of the different kinds of ways people lie, like innocent white lies. She also explains the different ways people deceive, such as ignoring the plain facts and leaving out major points to the story. When I read “ The Ways We Lie” it made me think of all the lies I produce without even thinking twice about the effects my lies have on people.
In most cases we tend to feel unworthy, ashamed, or embarrassed with our actions which ties it to what is right and what is wrong, morality and immorality. Shame is determined by who that person is and guilt is defined by what that person does. Nevertheless both shame and guilt makes a connection to the perception of how we see ourselves and our behaviors towards other people, especially during conflict. These have to be understood because Jane Tangney argues against the use of public humiliation as punishment in her essay published in the “Boston Globe” on August 5, 2001 and is quiet daring for proving her argument by evidence acquired from her own expertise on shame and guilt. June Tangney, psychology educator and researcher born in New York, believes that there’s another way to punish a person rather than putting them behind bars.
Sometimes lies need to be told in order to protect people, is this view point justified or is it just an excuse? I bet that when everyone was a student, the teacher will tell you not to lie. So basically, in the point of view of an educated human, the statement “Sometimes lies need to be told in order to protect people” is it just an excuse. As a Christian, I think that this statement is not justified, it is just an excuse. According to the Online Oxford Dictionary, the definition of “lie” is an intentionally false statement.
To what extent is lying permissible? Reading complicated articles on philosophy and psychology of lying makes people more anxious to know about the truth of lying. And one can ask to what extent is lying permissible? Every writer has different opinion about lying. Russell claims, lying is morally wrong, Carson believes in some cases it is preferable and Mazur states that different traditions advocate the lying in different circumstances.
It consists in gumming together long strips of words which have already been set in order by someone else, and making the results presentable by sheer humbug (Orwell 209).” Orwell uses powerful but invective language to argue that current writing habits are ineffective in affecting the audience in any meaningful way. He shows the weakness of the English language while displaying a powerful alternative to current writing styles. Another reason for his use of invective language is due to the dishonest nature of political writing. Orwell stated that political writing was formed “to make lies sound truthful and murder respectable, and to give an appearance of solidity to pure wind (Orwell 214).” This
Perjury is considered a serious offense as it can be used to usurp the power of the courts. Furthermore, they also talk about the psychological side of the subject for example, if the witness lost his memory then he shouldn't give any statement because his statement might affect either the person on trial or the witness himself. For that reason the lawyer is allowed to ask question to the witness just to be sure that the witness is telling the truth. Furthermore, the journal talks about bias, however the study is not taking any side they are just giving facts and statement about the issue. One of the quotes that stood up in the article was “witnesses can distort their own memories without the help of examiners, police officers or lawyers” The main point of this quote is that the witness is capable of lying or
Tell The Truth… Friedrich Nietzsche once said, “Belief in the truth commences with the doubting of all those “truths” we once believed.” This quote talks about how we hear so many lies that when it comes to the real truth we just don’t believe it anymore. In two particular stories they talk about the same thing. Not only do they talk about telling the truth they also talk about how it can affect us and others. In the story “Like the Sun” by R.K Narayan and in the poem “Tell the Truth but tell it Slant-“by Emily Dickinson are both similar and different in many ways, by having consequences or foreshadowing what’s going to happen, how some people say it, and the way people handle it. In the dictionary consequences is, “An act or instance of following something as an effect, result, or outcome.” In like the sun, Sekar tells the truth but he tells it how it is and that gives him a bad outcome.
