Opinion Paper on Chapter 4

Chapter four is all about style, form, and content. The chapter begins with a quote from Philip Johnson, which reads, “The duty of an artist is to strain against the bonds of the existing style.” This quote helps to set the stage for how the chapter is going to go. The chapter, Style, Form, and Content, lets readers in on the ideas of how art style is born, how art styles are different from one another, how art can be of the same style, yet completely different, how art can be appreciated, and so much more. Although the chapter is not very long, it is jam-packed with information for the ready, which is extremely important.
The author fills readers in on what style is, along with what form and content are, all on the first page. This introduction of three main vocabulary words in the beginning of the chapter is significant in the fact that it allows readers to understand exactly what the chapter will be about, and what they should focus on.
Style, which focuses on the distinctive handling of elements and media associated with the work of an individual artist, a school or movement, or a specific culture or time period, include art, culture, context, realistic art, expressionistic art, and abstract art as some of its major topics. The author gives many examples of artwork in the chapter, and when it comes to style, there are many different types of artwork, including photographs, paintings, oil canvases, sculptures, and more. The thing readers notice the most about all of the pieces of art is that they all share some sort of similarity, even if their style is different. Every piece of art contains a couple in a relationship. Even in the abstract art, it is clear that there are two people who seem to be in a relationship in the piece of art.
