Rilder Liddell Professor Gina Guarente English 101 21 April 2015 U.S. ARMY Cadets: West Point Cadets and ROTC Cadets Many individuals are not aware of the different routes and options provided by the U.S. Army for commission as an Officer into the military. There are three very viable options: enlisted soldier to officer, direct commission (automatic entrance as an officer due to career experience and education), or entrance via a commissioning program through college as a cadet. Most people associate U.S. Army cadets with the prestigious United States Military Academy at West Point, however, there are many cadets nationwide achieving the same feat through their respective college’s Reserve Officer Training Corp (ROTC) program. Both cadet options lead to the same goal, commission as a second lieutenant into the U.S. Army, nevertheless, they are very different paths with different requirements. Army. ROTC programs are funded and sponsored by the federal government through the Department of the Army, but are operated by the respective colleges who participate. Most major private and state colleges and universities contain an ROTC component. Students who desire to join the military and receive assistance with college tuition may seek out their school’s ROTC program and apply. ROTC cadets do not have an age limit to abide by, and may be married and have children; ROTC cadets must be physically fit and meet all Army standards. ROTC scholarships and commissioning opportunities are not limited to students in Bachelor degree programs, they are also offered to Master’s level students.
