What is Gitmo? Well Gitmo stands for Guantanamo bay, which is a controversial detainment and interrogation facility of the United States located within Guantanamo Bay Naval Base, Cuba. The need for this base arose after the attacks on the United States, which took place on September 11th 2001. The facility was created then 2002 by the Bush Administration to hold detainees from the war in Afghanistan and later Iraq. It is operated by the Joint Task Force Guantanamo (JTF-GTMO) of the United States government in Guantanamo Bay Naval Base. The Naval base consists of three camps which are Camp Delta (which includes Camp Echo), Camp Iguana, and Camp X-Ray. And at Camp 4 the soccer field is being enlarged and finally at Camp 5 another new 73,000 classroom is being built for the detainee’s. So with all the upgrades that Gitmo it would seem silly to close down the base because of all the money that has been spent on it already, it would seem then to be a waste. Also stated in her article she talks about how Gitmo has made many improvements and is trying to turn around the bad image that had been associated with it. And it seems like they had, because with all the reports that are coming out from reporters that are making trips there. The news only seems to be good. Judith also talks about how they are sparing little effort or expense to change that image. They are proving the detainees with prayer rugs, beads, caps and Korans in their native languages, and soldiers are instructed not interrupt their prayer five times a day and there are even arrows that point to where Mecca is located. It seems like their trying to make the detainees life there as comfortable as possible. This ultimately makes sense because for one these people are not under arrest or being tried for anything they are just being detained there because accused of being a threat to our country or their native home
