Performance-enhancing drugs refer to medications used to enhance muscle growth, physical endurance and other aspects of athletic performance. Examples of such drugs include anabolic steroids, better known as simply steroids, and drugs containing stimulants or diuretics. Though the specific effects of the drugs have not been thoroughly inspected, they are linked with numerous disadvantages. The use of performance enhancing drugs are able to enhance athlete’s physical abilities. However, these drugs can lead to adverse physical, emotional, legal and financial consequences. Therefore, performance enhancing drugs should be banned. This is because performance enhancing drugs brings unfair competition and risk ones’ life if used. Firstly, performance enhancing drugs creates unfair competition to the world of professional sports. This is because there’s unfair advantage between athletes that uses performance enhancing drugs and athletes that doesn’t. The use of performance enhancers is cheating because disobeys constitutive rules of the activity therefore we should expect the disqualification of competitors who are caught doping as stated in Pro Con.Org (2015). Apart from that, if performance enhancing drugs are used in athletes, the level of fair play would most likely cease to exist. These drugs can increase ones’ physical ability to perform better in competitions and therefore there’s an increased chance of winning. Remember that athletes don’t take these drugs to level the playing field, they do it to get an advantage. And if everyone else is doing what they’re doing, a vicious circle simply gets bigger as stated in Pro Con.Org (2015). Therefore, performance enhancing drugs produces unfair competition among athletes. In addition, performance enhancing drugs increases the health risk of an individual who have consume it.
