Shelly A English 102 9 February 2012 Are We Destined To Become Our Parents? Parents all over the world are not very different when it comes to teaching children values. The difference, however, lies in the fact that each family has their own set of values which at times conflict with the values of other cultures. All cultures hold courage, independence, and honesty to be values that should be instilled in children. From a young age we look up to our parents as a source of guidance. Although, we may not agree with their decisions, their values and influences have helped shape who we are today; so in the end we are destined to become like them. I was born in India and immigrated to the United States, along with my parents, at the age of two. We initially lived in New York City for six months, but ended up moving to Albany, New York. My dad worked long hours at a self service gas station for many years while my mom took care of me in our one bedroom apartment. Life in the U.S was not easy for them. Not only were they struggling financially to make ends meet, but they were also struggling with the English language. They often felt like giving up and moving back to India but what stopped them was my future. My parents have always dreamt of providing their children with the best education, security, and moral values. As I grew up, these values were gradually instilled within me. During my middle school years, I can remember how strict my parent’s values had gotten towards my education. I was not able to do certain things many young kids would do such as staying after school for extracurricular activities, hanging out with friends, etc. While my friends spent their weekends hanging out and going to the movies, I was at home studying.
