Are smart phones such a smart idea? The original intent of smart phones were to enhance everyday life and make things such as, the internet, email, entertainment, more accessible and convenient, but this is not the only affect these phones have had on our society as a whole. Smart phones and other advanced technology have now begun to affect our social behavior as well. Slowly over time they have become a part of American’s daily life style. In 2006, only 15% of Americans owned a smart phone, but by 2009 42% of Americans owned a smart phone. Today nearly 50% of Americans own a smart phone, and this percentage is steadily increasing all according to “Study: 42 percent of U.S. uses a smartphone” on mobihealthnews.com. Smart phones have definitely made an impact upon our society, some negative and some positive. Smart phones have without a doubt improved our accessibility to the internet and has improved our ways of communication tremendously. Before smart phones, people had to rely on their own computers and if they were lucky enough to have a laptop they would use it. Even those who had a laptop had the inconvenience of having to carry it around in a bag or by hand. On top of this inconvenience, most of the time, unless there was a nearby wifi hotspot or someone bought a wifi connector through their phone company, no one had internet once they were outside of their house. This essentially made carrying around a laptop obsolete. With the rise of smart phones, people could virtually have access to the internet whenever they wanted it so long as they have service with their phone carrier. Also, smart phones have made it easier to communicate with people because now they are able to access contacts not only through their phone but through their facebook, twitter, and other social networks.
