Applying Roger's Theory of the Adoption of New Technology Systems Julie Lamb Walden University Transforming Nursing and Healthcare Through Technology NURS 6051N-14 April 13, 2014 Applying Roger's Theory of the Adoption of New Technology Systems “Successful implementation of new technology requires overcoming people’s natural resistance to change” (Wood, 2010, para. 2). Nurses are naturally resistant to change. Nurses develop routines to help mange their time. Without superb time management, a nurse’s job will never get done. When implementing a new electronic health record (EHR), this disrupts the routine that nurses have worked hard to develop. According to the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), U.S. hospitals are to become meaningful users of EHR (Kelley, Brandon, & Docherty, 2011). How can the disruption be minimized while implementing a new EHR as directed by the ARRA? Relative Advantage Relative advantage is when “the individual adopting the new innovation must see how it will be an improvement over the old way of doing things (Rogers, 2003). “To what degree is the EHR perceived to be better than the practice it aims to supersede – paper charts?” (Gur-Arie, 2010). EHRs can help improve patient…show more content…
This change can be implemented using Roger’s theory of the diffusion of innovations. Using the five qualities identified by Rogers include; relative advantage, compatibility, simplicity, trialability, and observable results. The new EHR will improve patient care and patient outcomes. With the implementation of this system nurses will be provided with classroom training, one-on-one training, and the assistance of super users. These will help ensure adequate preparation as the system is implemented in stages. Nurses will be able to communicate any questions or concerns throughout the entire process. As the new system is implemented, the quality of care for patients will
