In William Lutzs’ essay “With These Words, I Can Sell You Anything” , he explains how advertisers use weasel words in advertisements. These words are misleading and often times leave it up to the consumers to fill in the blanks. This type of technique often lead the consumer to believe the product will do exactly what that want it to do. Many contemporary cosmetic ads use some of the techniques that Lutz addressed in his essay. Some of those techniques include: the use of unfinished comparisons, unfinished claims, scientific words, and the use of words that make consumers forget about the product and focus on something bigger, better, and more attractive.
Although you may not need it, if you really want it bad enough you’ll buy it.” (Dittfurth). He makes an excellent point about how we will buy something if we really want it but how do we know that we really want some thing. When advertisers tell us that we need some thing they make us think that we really need it by saying that everyone else has it. When advertisers push us into believing something, we don’t realize that we are spending our money on something we don’t need when we could be spending the money on something that will help us get farther ahead in life. Another one of my peers, Catherine Arrighi, majoring in business says “if you think about it, consumerism can be a good thing because there are people always trying to invent ‘the next big thing’ therefore stimulating many minds to an endless possibility of inventions and creative ideas” (Arrighi).
The DSM and similar books are often made in western society so they can’t be used correctly in eastern societies making them culturally biased. Part of the psychological diagnosis test is a personality or intelligence test. These tests are created in and based on western society. They are based on the things that western norms are. These tests are then standardised by people of western cultures.
(2) One in five of the college students that admit to using this drug also admits to not having ADHD. (1) So why do they do it? Just like athletes take steroids and depressed people take anti-depressants, students who wish to do a lot of work and do it fast have Adderall. The common side effects of a normally functioning frontal cortex when on Adderall are a very heightened sense of motivation, focus, and concentration. These as well as being able to pull all-nighters, and drink an in ornament amount of alcohol with little side effect are all reasons this drug appeals to college students.
Another person, named Samuel Sewall, wrote a petition about the Salem witchcraft hysteria beliefs. In his petition, he describes how God should repent his sins, and he asks for forgiveness because he realizes that the witchcraft in Salem did not exist (Document A). Not only did the Salem witchcraft affect beliefs/morals, but it also affected justice. The Salem witchcraft hysteria of 1692 had a significant effect on justice in America because it changed the thought of many laws and the way people were
I believe the phrases “Public Opinion” and “Voice of God” are integrated into Twain’s conclusion in order to provide a hint of irony to sum up the effects of popular opinion. Twain first uses “Public Opinion” as a noun in order to display its influence on the common individual. In the previous sentence before the phrase is mentioned, Twain state that “We all do no end of feeling, and we mistake it for thinking.” “It” is Public Opinion, and its influence makes man involuntarily lean towards trends in society. “Voice of God” is then used as ironic evidence that people who try to justify their supposedly “individualistic” thoughts are actually influenced by an external source (religious activists). The phrase “Some think it is the Voice of God” is crucial in that “some” is used rather than a singular noun, proving that these justifications have already been influenced by external sources, thus proving
We might not know it, but or new might be controlled by the government in order to keep order. The crimes people commit and the punishment they recieve might be advertising what we shouldn't do as a society. Which would mean that Orwell's telescreen and our modernday televisions might have the same dark purpose only that our's is concealed with entertainment. Orwell's vision had cometrue, in one way or another, an example in histoy is Nazis Germany. They also changed their documented history in order to seem that the German Knights had wanted a Third Reich.
Therefore, it can be said that religion can be used as a form of cultural defence against the rapidly increasing West. The use of religion as a cultural defence is very evident in modern times with the rise of Fundamentalism. Those from ethnic minorities opposing Western values so much that they are willing to kill others and themselves to prove this. The clash of civilisations has been evident between Islam and the West for hundreds of years but became known throughout the world after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Fundamentalists are using religion to defend their culture in a negative way and have thus created a stigma for ethnic minorities.
Ethnocentrism is judging another culture or religion by the beliefs, and values of their own religion. Ethnocentrism is considered a natural human habit, and it has developed a generally negative connotation. Ethnocentrism can be detrimental to a society in many ways. First, it can make someone judge another person because they are not the same religion, and they will automatically feel hate towards the other person. Second, we will probably think wrong of that person and decide not to get to know them since we already decided to judge them before we actually met them.
Current controversy regarding the role the media plays in today's world stems from biased propaganda and is retrogressive in essence. Here are the counter arguments to the basic problems identified with the increased exposure or of free media: 1. Stereotyping: It is argued that biased coverage of the media breeds one sided views which in turn leads to mis- or under-representation of certain other groups, leading to wrong image and perception formulation. The simple counter-argument is pluralism! The wide variety of information available, the different numbers of channels, various inter-community discussion forums ensure that no one is unrepresented.
