Anna Sui was born August 4, 1964 in Detroit, Michigan. She started taking an interest in fashion at the young age of 4. She went fabric shopping with her mom and would watch her sew. She moved to New York and graduated from Parson’s School of design, while there she got her first design job with Erica Elias at “Charlie’s Girls.” [pic]She learned most of what she knows now working at this place. In 1981 she was working for a company called Glenora, and that’s when she got the idea to do her own line. She wasn’t sure how to get started so her friends suggested she set up a booth at a trade show. She made five pieces and got tons of orders. The man she worked for told her to stop making her own clothes or she was going to be fired. She let him fire her. In 1991 Sui put on her first fashion show. She’d been designing her own line for ten years at this point. In 1992 she opened her first boutique on Greene Street in Soho. In 1997 most of Sui’s licensing is done through Isetan and she opens boutiques in Tokyo and Osaka. She also lands a fragrance deal with Wella (now P&G). In 1999 she launched her cosmetic line and her signature fragrance Anna Sui and followed up in 2000 when she launched a skincare line and second fragrance Sui Dreams. She has also put out four other fragrances, Sui Love (2001), Dolly Girl (2003), Dolly Girl Oh la Love (2004) and Secret wish (2005). Anna Sui’s boutiques are featured in Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong and the USA. She has over 300 sales outlets in over 30 countries. She has 27 accessory shops in Taiwan, Korea, Hong Kong, and Shanghai, and 42 specialty shops in Japan. Today she also has a line for Target. Clearly being fired was the best decision she ever made.
