Annie Leibovitz Annie Leibovitz was born October 2, 1949 in Westbury, Connecticut, to Sam and Marilyn Leibovitz, an Air force Lieutenant and a modern dance instructor. In 1967, Annie enrolled at the San Francisco Art Institute majoring in painting. It wasn’t until she took a trip to Japan with her mother after her sophomore year, that she realized her love for photography. She lived briefly on an Israeli kibbutz and returned to the United States in 1970 and applied for a job with the, then, start-up rock music magazine Rolling Stone. Jann Wenner, Editor for Rolling Stone at the time, was very impressed with Leibovitz portfolio and offered her a job as a staff photographer. After two years of working as a staff photographer for the magazine she was promoted to Chief Photographer at the age f 23, she held this title for 10 years. While with the magazine she developed her trademark style, which is the use of bold primary colors and surprising poses. Annie has been credited by the editor as making many Rolling Stone covers collector’s items. One of her most famous photographs would be an issue of Rolling Stone that featured a nude John Lennon curled around his fully clothed wife, Yoko Ono. Another memorable photograph for her would be the photo taken just hours before his death, of the former Beatle who was shot on December 8, 1980. In 1983, Leibovitz left Rolling Stone and started working for the entertainment magazine Vanity Fair. For this magazine her photographs ranged from presidents to literary icons to teen heartthrobs. Some of her most remembered photographs for Vanity Fair would be Demi Moore, very pregnant and very nude, and Whoopi Goldberg, half-submerged in a bathtub full of milk.
