Constructive speech : Animal Experimentation I. Introduction A. Attention – “Deer head quote by Ellen DeGeneres.” If someone told you that if you killed a baby bird you could possibly save thousands of human lives and if you didn’t then by next week they would all be dead. Which would you choose? B. Meaning – The British Royal Society argues that almost every medical achievement in the 20th century relied on the use of animals in some way (Gershoff, 2009). If the use of animals in experimentation is eliminated, there are many risks in the future for humans and nonhumans. “Those who oppose the use of animals say that alternate scientific methods can achieve the same or better results” (Gershoff, 2009, p. 3). Other methods of investigation provide useful information and the search for changes to animal experimentation is a main concern at the National Institutes of Health and medical research organizations all over the world. However, the need for animal experimentation isn’t going to go away. Gershoff explains that soon there will even be an increase in the need for animals in order to truly understand the secrets of our DNA. C. Thesis – Should scientist continue to be able to test animals in medical research or should animal experimentation be illegal. Various dangerous diseases such as herpes simplex, hepatitis B, polio, rabies, malaria and mumps have been treated due to medications developed from tests on animals (Pandey, 2010). Animals are living creatures that develop various diseases as well. If, as the animal rights groups say, the medical problems of humans should be studied on people, then it seems that the problems of animals should be researched on animals. However, in reading animal rights campaigns, there is a lack of discussion on how to do research on the medical needs of animals (Gershoff, 2009). D. I will be talking to you
