Sheila Sarathy Michael Roukas English 108 Analyzing Turkle There is a certain question we can ask ourselves, a simple question that can unlock… according to Sherry Turkle, “a rich stock of memories, associations and insights into our thought processes.” What is your object-to-think-with? Sherry says that an "object-to-think-with" is a framework for our perception of ourselves and others. Sherry Turkle's overall conception of object-to-think-with, is an idea not spoken about a lot with authors and journalists. Accordingly, it was very introspective and interpersonal of her to expand on a subject like this. People usually have these inner thoughts to themselves, and they wonder if anyone else thinks like this, assuming if you are the only one. Sherry Turkle takes note of that and covers all the questions for why we feel this way when thinking about any object. Basically, from Sherry Turkle’s The Secret Power of Things We Hold Dear, I can infer what an object-to-think-with actually means. It is anything that you sense (i.e. see, feel, smell, taste, and hear) that when your mind dwells on this specific thing, the thoughts are not even remotely related to the ones of another person. This may be a person who is not in your life right now, it would be even more powerful then, because anything they have become in signified contact with, is the only couple sources of last memories of that person. In Sherry Turkle’s case, it was an excuse to look for someone, or the theoretical ghost of someone. It happened to be somewhat of a yearning to obtain a sense of closure with her father.
