Remember those smart blazers and black ties we all were privileged to wear to school from Monday to Friday? We all do have great memories of those splendid striped skirts that made us feel pride in oneself. Anyone can agree that the single-most visible element of any school is of course the school uniform. For decades school uniforms have been around providing students with a sense of dignity, unity and security. Most students can agree that uniforms are the most exciting component about school, however governments and schools are reconsidering removing the school uniform policy, but what they really are removing is an important childhood memory and breaking a tradition. School uniforms help transform students to obtain a neat and smart appearance and as a matter of fact, help prepare them for adulthood for many reasons. A majority of school uniforms are designed to give a formal approach, which develops a neat, presentable and professional appearance for all students. Many public schools don’t require a uniform policy, including the public school I went to back in my primary years. The way I remember how most students dressed when attending this school would give the appearance that they were going to a night club, it was disappointing to see numerous amounts of young students dress this inappropriately. The Department of Education and Training of New South Wales for example believes that “a school uniform or a school dress code will develop in students an understanding of the importance of personal neatness, appearance, presentation and self-discipline and that this learning experience will assist the student to enter the workforce with these personal skills” (Law stuff Australia, “school uniforms” 2010, my italics).
