Outline I. Introductory Paragraph i. Thesis Statement 1. Mildred is not blind to reality and her joyful disposition is fabricated. II. Body Paragraph I i. Topic Sentence 1. Mildred's behavior is that of an addict. ii. Evidence 1. "Abruptly the room took off on a rocket flight into the clouds, it plunged into a lime-green sea where blue fish ate red and yellow fish." ~ Narrator (pg. 94) a. This describes what's being displayed on the parlor walls, which is Mildred's favorite means of escape from reality. b. This symbolizes the colorful and spontaneous effects of hallucinogens, which in our modern-day society is the type of drug best known for causing people to completely lose their sense of reality. 2. "She went out of the room and did nothing to the parlor and came back." ~ Narrator (pg. 49) a. This is her response when Guy, who is feeling sick, asks her to lower the volume in the parlor. She cares more about the entertainment she can get from the parlor than about the welfare of her own husband. b. Likewise, in our society, addictions will take over a person's entire life and, in many cases, cause a person to sacrifice their connections with their friends and family in order to feed the cravings that result from the addictions. III. Body Paragraph II i. Topic Sentence 1. Mildred's reality is dull and empty. ii. Evidence 1. "Go on, anyway, shove the bore down, slush up the emptiness, if such a thing could be brought out in the throb of the suction snake." ~ Narrator (pgs. 14-15) a. This takes place at the beginning, when Mildred receives the endoscopic treatment after her overdose. It is implied that once the drugs are extracted from her body, there is nothing left inside of her. b. This is a literal example used to symbolize Mildred's emotional reality.
