She was givenup by her mom when she was an infent, living with a foster family ( Alan & Sera ). They are a wealthy family that Loves and has high expectations for Mary Potts. Mary Potts is pregnant and believes theres an illness going on with her baby. She finds the letter her moms writes her and calls the number she left on it.

5 Paragraph Character Essay "Everyday Use," by Alice Walker is a short story about an unlucky family who struggles to make it. Maggie and Dee's mother goes out of her way to give them the life they deserve. In Alice Walker's short story "Everyday Use," Dee is an unlikable person because she is arrogant, selfish, and ungrateful. Dee is a very arrogant person. Dee is under the impression that she appreciates her heritage more than Maggie ever could.
I don't care what she says and what she does. I seen 'em poison before, but I never see not piece of jail bait worse than her. You leave her be. "That Curley's wife does not love her husband and is merely concerned with her own pleasure and welfare is revealed in her conversation with Lennie in Chapter 5 in which she reveals that she married Curley to get away from the little town in which she lived:Well, I wasn't gonna stay no place where I couldn't get nowhere or make something of myself, an' where they stole your letters....So I married Curley. Met him out to the Riverside Dance Palace that same night....Well, I ain't told this to nobody before...I don' like Curley...So, Curley's wife deserves little sympathy, although her death is tragic.
Mama notes how nice and wavy the ground looks, intentionally to impress Dee. Reflecting her own thoughts as Maggie’s, she tells how Maggie will be nervous until her sister leaves. Mama says, “she will stand hopelessly in the corners and shamed…She thinks her sister has always held life in the palm of one hand, that no is a word the world would never say to her.” (Walker). Leaving the reader to not know how Maggie really feels about Dee at all. Mama daydreams of meeting on a T.V.
As a punishment for her horrible sportsmanship, Massie's parents, William block and Kendra block cancel her credit card so she can pay them for the riding camp. Kendra suggests that Massie work as a babysitter, like Kendra's friend Trini Neufeld's daughter, Ellie. Massie, horrified at the suggestion of working at a job that is that LBRish, asks her mom if she can choose her own "jobby"--a job-hobby. Kendra agrees. While flipping through a magazine one day, Massie sees a Opportunity being a Be Pretty Cosmetics salesgirl.
While living with her abusive father who she chooses to only call T. Ray, Lily feels that she is lacking certain femininity in her life. She battles with her hair which was “constantly going off in eleven different directions” (Kidd 3) and when she woke up with a rose-petal stain on her panties she was “so proud of that flower and didn’t have a soul to show it to except Rosaleen”(13). Rosaleen is Lily’s housekeeper and one of her only friends. Lily’s curiosities about her mother lead her to the attic where she finds some of her mother’s belongings. Lily keeps everything she finds of her mother’s in a small tin buried in the orchards outside her house.
She immediately puts it on and watches her reflection in a puddle change into a gorgeous woman. But before she leaves, her father warns her of what will happen when she is married. The necklace will break and she will return to her natural state. She understands and quickly runs back into the bakery. When Cirtap sees the beautiful woman he drops the pile of bread he was carrying.
Maria’s mother acts fast and hides Maria and Alberto in the hole her father made for their safety. Maria’s mother scarifies herself for the safety of her children. If Maria’s mother went into the hole with them the Contras would of notice the untouched breakfast on the table and would search for them and kill them all. By Maria’s mother staying behind the Contras thought they got everyone in the house and would not search for Maria and Alberto. Trauma begins when Maria hears everything from the hole and the torturing and screaming of her mother.
She had hated the house that much.” This shows just how much Dee cared about her lifestyle and the location of the house. Resulting from her disrespect, she pushes her mother around. When Dee tries to take the quilts, Mama tells Dee that she had promised Maggie she could have them one day. Dee disregards her mother’s comment and begins to walk out the door. Mama realizes she must stand up to Dee and tell her that she cannot take the quilts because they are Maggie’s.
