Akio Morita, the co-founder and former leader of Sony, is a remarkable leader whose success contributed not only to his company's growth, but to Japan's economic recovery as well . Through a strong vision and ongoing determination, he was able to inspire creativity and innovation among his employees. Coupling Japanese traditions with a more open minded US way of leading , he created his own unique style that pushed Sony from being a small radio repair shop to the global electronics entertainment giant it is today . Akio Morita’s global success was born out his own passion for a strong vision, which allowed him to formulate strategies in order to make it a reality. He wanted to change the world’s perception of products that were made in Japan, as in the 50s people associated the phrase “Made in Japan” with cheap poor quality items, toys, and imitations . Japanese products usually hid under the image of other global brands, and it was unusual to find large Japanese brands that were world renown for their high quality . Yet, that was exactly what Morita hoped to make of Sony. He hoped to create products of the best quality and finest technology that would eventually redefine this phrase, and lead to high customer satisfaction . Taking into account Japan’s situation at the time, with it’s defeat in WWII, Akio Morita must have been extremely insightful to envision Japan playing an important part in the global technology industry as a marketplace leader . What’s interesting is that Morita displayed visionary behavior in all aspects of his leadership, and as Sony grew, his vision continued to grow with it . Incidentally, when his company expanded internationally his vision soon developed into: “Think globally, act locally” which entails sharing a common value system beyond national borders, so that Sony serves all stakeholders of the company, be it customers, employees,
