The Native Americans have been affected by disease by the Europeans, during this period European settlers brought many different technologies and their lifestyles with them, but the most harmful effect is their arrival and the spread of their diseases. While many instances such as mistreating humans and taking over and killing cultures were by no means acceptable, let alone positive, during this same time, explorers were risking their lives for their country and their own glory, all in an attempt to find new routes. As it turns out, they ended up finding whole new land masses. One of the biggest issues to come out of the Age of Exploration and the new-found trade routes was the development of the Slave Trade. While there was slavery in some areas previous to the Slave Trade, this was the first time that mass amounts of slaves were being taken from their homes, shipped across the ocean like cargo, and sold, being neglected as people and looked at as if they were merchandise. One of the most prominent sources for slaves was Africa.
The arrival of Columbus and other Europeans wreaked havoc and caused many detrimental effects on the lives of the present population during the sixteenth century. The arrival of the Europeans in various ways caused the death of thousands of indigenous people dwelling within the Caribbean. “One was the importation from Europe and Africa diseases such as small pox, measles, dysentery, influenza, leprosy, yellow fever, typhoid, elephantiasis, against which the American Indian had no immunity”1. Small pox (fig.3) and measles was the most effective of these newly introduced diseases. The indigenous persons though lived sacred spiritual lives, as they practiced nature worship, ancestry worship as well as protective magic.

With the trading of the Columbian Exchange, diseases were increasing and affecting both the Americas and Europe. The Europeans brought multiple new diseases to the Native American population, smallpox being a major known disease. Wiping out two-thirds of the Native American population, they weren’t used to the infectious disease being brought with domesticated animals. With the impact of diseases not being as effective on Europe as it was for the Americas, Europe could withstand it. Also demographically, the start of sugar plantations and silver mines was another major effect on the Native Americans.
Instead of focusing on the obvious unconstitutional and emotional treachery of slavery which is very much overdone, the economic event was very much overlooked. Though its strong economic gain for the entire nation forever impacted our dominance, the negative effects will always pour through. It was the existence of slavery, with its negative impact on politics, economics, and social relations that fatally crippled the South in its bid for independence. The slave trade eventually played a central role in determining the fate of the South, as a business that created a unified South under proslavery ideology and encouraged western migration to preserve the institution of slavery. As mentioned by William Harper, “The cultivation of the great staple crop cannot be carried on without slaves.” (Harper, Memoir in Slavery, 1837) In a time of western expansion and the cotton boom, some slave traders were able to accumulate great wealth from the slave-trading business and sought opportunities to acquire higher social status and financial stability.
Most countries like to explore different areas, so they can make medical and scientific research. When a powerful country wants to find the cure for a disease, imperialism is an useful technique that they can afford. For example, when Europe imperialized Africa, Europe tried to find a cute for all the diseases that were killing people in Africa, such as Hepatitis A, Malaria, Ebola and Typhoid fever. The tropical parts of Africa were not the best, for that reason many diseases were developing. Also, Europe helped the economic in Africa by creating many hospitals and providing jobs to people.
