I try looking for a job first to take care of my daughter and pay for my finances but that wasn’t successful. I needed to have a high school degree and a few years’ experience. It was a few days before I contacted Student Services at a nearby school and enrolled immediately. My journey has just begun and I never knew the road to success could be so difficult. I had many sleepless nights and so many assignments I thought I would never finish.
They would have planned out what they want and what they need to do to pursue that goal. Sometimes time is all we need to prepare ourselves to make big decisions, that’s why I believe that high school graduates should take a year off to think, process and think twice about their career before entering
As a single parent, I had to put my educational goals on the back burner to raising my family. I excelled in High School, which helped facilitate securing a position with a firm in which financially allowed me to keep a roof over our heads, clothes on our back and food on the table. While furthering my education was always in the back of my mind, I knew at that point and time in my life, it just wasn’t in the cards. Fast forward 25 years: my children are all grown up and with the exception of my 16 year old, they’re all self supporting and out on their own. I now have the opportunity to fulfill my mother’s desire for me to continue my education and reach that goal I made over 30 years ago.
It pays well, but there is no room for advancement in that department. I have submitted my resume for many positions. This year I’ve been rejected three times or passed over for someone with a degree. For a while I believed this is as far as i will get, but I refused to give up. I decided to go back to school and get a college education, I knew my work schedule would not permit me to go into an actual classroom so i opted for the next best, online college.
Gateway also provides a Career and Transfer Center with services available to all students; therefore, the transition into a four-year college is smooth and virtually stress-free. Transferrable credits are a leading factor on why I chose to attend Gateway. I am associated with a local elementary school librarian who was a former student here. She has recommended Gateway Community and Technical College and discussed my concerns about having been out of school for over ten years by the time I decided to attend college. Her suggestion was to attend Gateway to obtain a two-year degree.
All applicants are encouraged to apply. Louisiana Tech University may admit students not meeting all state requirements. In such cases, the admission decision will be affected by the student's potential for degree completion and the need to enhance the university's demographically diverse student population. The summer of two thousand and ten was the beginning of the turning points and failure in my life. I was only twenty two years old and was about to graduate with my bachelors the next year. I had my goals planed but sometimes life sees different. I received a notice from Claflin University that I had a balance of two thousand dollars for my tuition. Everything that was good went bad.
Senior year in high school was the more fun than hard work because all of your graduation exams should be completed, you should be on half days and most of your classes should be easy. Grad exams are required to graduate from high school. They are a series of test in each subject; the subjects are math, English, science, and social studies. Each subject has a certain score that you must pass required by state law. If the grad exams are not passed by 12th grade you will not graduate until you pass.
Of my NAVY career alone in the state of Seattle, due to a huge miscommunication and misunderstanding as well as irresponsibility on behalf of my NAVY recruiter. I was told that I would receive the same housing allowance in the state of Seattle as in New York, which is about $2,800 dollars a month if I moved my wife and daughter to Seattle. My family and I would have had big financial issues not to mention that I did not even have the funds to afford a car at that time. By leaving my family behind in New York City, I was able to balance out our budget and cost of living expenses. I was able to see my family only every six months for twelve days of vacation time.
I tried going to alternative school while working and pregnant but that did not last but a semester either. I was to worried about what my child’s father was doing that I also quit going to that school. Six months after having my first child I ended up pregnant with my second one. I knew from then that I had no chance of ever going back. So I got married at 17 and started just playing the house wife and mom, till it came to me having to find a job.
