There is some debate as to whether this is a mental health disorder or an individual that willfully chooses to manipulate and practice abnormal behavior. In general a personality disorder can be defined as a “long-term pattern of thinking, feeling and behavior” that contrasts drastically from the accepted norms of a culture or society (Clinton, Hart & Ohlschlager, 2005). The DSM-4 outlines the specific criteria an individual’s thinking, feeling and behavior must meet in order to be diagnosed with borderline personality disorder. In order to be classified an individual’s personality traits must be pathological and show impairment in both self and interpersonal function. An individual must meet five or more of the criteria outlined in the DSM-4 in order to be diagnosed with borderline personality disorder. Individuals that exhibit a personality disorder are inclined to react in an identical way when confronted with an assortment of interpersonal situations (Clinton, et al., 2005). The idea is that each personality disorder is in reality what Alfred Adler referred to as “mistaken beliefs” as it relates to thinking, feeling and behavior (Clinton, et al., 2005). The Christian worldview believes there are those who do suffer from mental health disorders however many of the mental health disorders identified in the last 20 years are the manifestation of a sinful life. A Christian cognitive-behavioral therapy that focuses the individual first on Christ while at the same time directs the person to work on changing their incorrect thought processes, destructive emotions and behaviors is the most effective and has the long term results (Crabb, 2013). As it says in Romans 12:2 Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship.
