The Native American, also known as the American Indian, was the original inhabitants of the American land as we know it today. Prior to the coming of European explores the American Indian consisted of hundreds of different tribes and cultures throughout America. American Indians believed they were created from earth, water and stars. 10 – 90 million Native Americans inhabited America at the time of the European arrivals. The Indian man was hunter and warrior, while women took care of the children, cultivated and harvested crops, ground grains for making flour and maintained the tents. The main crops of the American Indians were corn, squash and bean, but all the tribes collected forest products. Today there are more than half a million Indians in the United States. They are still trying to cope with adjustment to white civilization. In the United States, they still speak more than 100 different languages. Dance was one of the main ritualistic practices of the Native Americans. Native Indians dancing around a sacred circle is common. The Pow Wow for example is one of the most popular Native American dances. There are many stereotypes that inaccurately represent Native Americans. The main one being alcoholism. Many people believe that all Native Americans are alcoholics. However not all Native Americans drink. Another stereotype is how all Native Americans are still compared to the tribal and savage Native Americans of the past. Another stereotype is that Native Americans still reject the “white man” for destroying their land hundreds of years ago. Many people know only the myths and stereotypes about this country's first Americans.
