Ad paper English 101 Geoffrey Katzer This is an ad produced by the ACT group. The ACT group is a non-profit organization they strives for environmental change, sustainability and social responsibility. “Some advertisements seek primarily to gain the attention or stimulate interest in hopes that purchases will follow.” (Pope, 3) The truth in this statement is present in this ad, although the purchase is not an exchange of currency, but a call to action. The ad is one that shows a black boy sitting in a box and looking into the camera. The colors are dark and the caption reads “there are some kids that don't have to tidy their room.” The ACT group shows with this ad how the less fortunate are forced to live because they were born into an unlucky situation and entice the audience to act for the good of those who need it. One of the ways this point is put across is with the wording of the caption. The boy is sitting in a box and obviously has no room to call his own and he probably doesn't even have a roof over his head. They rope your emotions into the equation by using a small child as the subject. I feel that the ad is tailored to the well-off in general, but the use of a child is most definitely to draw in parents and mothers even more so. If a mother looks at this ad, they see a poor little African child with no family or anyone to take care of him. She sees this and her nurturer side comes out with fury and she very much wants to help the little one. The mother observing the ad starts to think about the horrible situations the child could be suffering through, and because of the small knowledge she most likely has on the subject, she knows that the situations she is thinking up are not only possible, but
