“Andre’s Mother” is about a gay man, Cal, whose lover, Andre, dies of AIDS. In the story, Andre’s mother did not know that Andre was gay because he was too afraid of the judgment his mother would cast upon him. However, as the story progresses it is Cal who, at the funeral of Andre, tells Andre’s mother of his homosexuality and brings a final peace to the play. At the beginning of the funeral before Cal’s father and sister leave him to talk to Andre’s mother privately, Cal’s father shares something with Andre’s mother about his relationship with her son. He says that although he was not like a son to him, he liked Andre and that because of his connection with him it helped to understand his own son better.

Somehow, it seems that in the interest of trying to give their children all that they never had and to give their kids the privacy that they yearned for as children; parents seem to be confused about what the role of a parent should be during the adolescent journey of their children. Gogol blasted back with the fact that he was only 5 years old and did not understand.
“Aunt Margery,” as she was known to Thurber, took the role of his mother for most of his childhood. She was such a major influence on him that he mentioned her in the preface of one of his pieces called The Thurber Carnivals (Bernstein, 14).
