Even someone as greedy and heartless as Scrooge possesses some empathy. In all darkness, human compassion and bonds with each other still take hold. A person’s life cannot be complete with out the sympathy and pleasure that comes from interactions with others. In the novella A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, the three ghosts help Scrooge regain his empathy by awakening his old emotions, letting him experience human relationships, and showing him the true meaning of consequence.

The manager’s job in his branch has become available but he has reservations about applying as he does not want to upset the apple cart if he is not successful. He knows deep down that he can do the job as he has stood in for the present manager many times when he has been on leave, but something seems to be holding him back and he cannot quite put his finger on it. He says that all the people in the office see him as a bit boring as he never goes put with them for a drink after work on a Friday. The reason he doesn’t go is because that is the day he visits his mother in the home she lives in, and she would never understand if he changed the day and would pick on him even more than usual.
In another one of Margaret Cheney’s novels, Man out of Time, She explains that his schedule often gave the impression that there was more than one of him. His days and nights blended together because he would rarely close his eyes to sleep (194). Nikola’s obsession with invention never faded even as he advanced in age, he spent all of his time trying to create his death ray before he died (Thomas). His father, John Dickens, living beyond his means, received imprisonment for debt, along with his wife and most of their children were sent to the Marshalsea in 1824. Dickens at age 12 was removed from school and sent to work at a shoe dye factory, earning six shillings a week to help support his family. Despite his parents’ best efforts, the family remained poor. He felt abandoned and betrayed by the adults who were supposed to take care of him. His childhood poverty and feelings of abandonment, although unknown to his readers until after his death, has a heavy influence on Dickens later views on social reform and the world he would create through his fiction.
Text response ‘ in A Christmas Carol the main character is Christmas itself. To what extent do you agree?’ Charles dickens’ ‘A Christmas Carol’ first written in 1842 is a social commentary on the sudden industrial growth of the capitalist Victorian society in which he lived. Dickens for most is condemning the division between the rich and the poor, which existed within England at the time. The novel is set in the festive and upbeat time that is Christmas, which to Dickens was no better way of representing a society that had many blemishes. Dickens presents us with a man who fought hard to succeed in business however lost touch with not only himself but also the wider community including those close to him.
Christmas in England began in AD 596, when St Augustine landed on her shores with monks who wanted to bring Christianity to the Anglo Saxons. Father Christmas delivers them during the night before Christmas. The Children leave an empty stocking or pillowcase hanging at the end of the bed. In the morning they hope it will be full of presents. In England the day after Christmas is called Boxing Day because boys used to go round collecting money in clay boxes.
The famous Christmas tree tradition began in 1847 when Prince Albert had Christmas trees, loaded with presents and wax candles, put up at Windsor Castle. This tradition spread as many citizens followed the royal example. Another custom was to hang several symbolic plants within your home. This included mistletoe, a plant on which bright white berries grew. It is custom to kiss under mistletoe; the number of berries is equal to the number of kisses because after every kiss a berry is removed.
A CHRISTMAS CAROL STUDY GUIDE Zac Hogan INTRODUCTION A Christmas Carol is a ‘novella’ (short novel) designed to inspire charity and goodwill in people’s hearts at a time of great hardship for the poor in Victorian England and to reinvigorate the traditions involved in the celebration of Christmas. It was written as a modern-day fairy tale or ghost story that cautions the reader about the damage that meanness can do to the human heart, but it also contains messages of hope – that it is never too late to change, to reach out and help others. It blends many ‘genres’ or types of writing; it is sentimental and melodramatic and it draws on fables, fairy tales, ghost stories, morality tales and Christmas traditions to create its storyline and effects. But lets dive more deeply into the parts that make up the story GENRE This is the kind of story that is being told i.e. fiction or science fiction.
A great way to start off the holiday season is by reading the classic tale of A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. You might’ve seen adaptations of it in TV shows and movies, but the book has a special magic that will have your imagination running wild. As a Christmas story, this is as good as it gets. The novel is a fable about poverty in London during the early 1800’s, with the infamous Scrooge representing the greed of the rich. I loved the style of narration, the overall message, and how the story presents the festivity of Christmas.
