A Christmas Carol Comment On The Transformation In Scrooges Character As A Result Of The Spirits He Encounters. A Christmas carol was written by Charles dickens, a famous author best known for classics. He was a writer who truly saw into the daily lives of many people, rich or poor- he recognised that that in the Victorian era Christmas was in decline. He wrote this book to send a concise message to everyone at that time what Christmas was all about; he had a mission to transform all everyday scrooges into kind, empathetic men. The book is set in London in the middle of the 19th century. The whole book revolves around a man called Mr. Ebenezer Scrooge who was cold, hard and cruel. It is about his transformation into a decent, worthy man. Bob Cratchit was scrooge’s devoted clerk for many years and was forced to attend long tireless days at the office of scrooge and his deceased business partner, Jacob Marley. He worked very long hours and very hard every single day but not once did scrooge ever say “thank you” .He was also paid very little- He barely had enough to keep his family going. Scrooge treats Bob Cratchit as if he is merely a door mat outside his office; he can easily just walk all over him and Bob won’t do anything to prevent it. He was made to work in the freezing cold; scrooge would only allow a very small amount of coal for the fire. All he had for warmth was a dim wax candle. 'Scrooge had a very small fire, but the clerk's fire was so very much smaller that it looked like one coal'. This shows how little scrooge really cares about his employee's well being. An ordinary man wouldn't even think twice about Making you work on Christmas day but Ebenezer scrooge didn't expect one to ask for a holiday. Scrooge was very reluctant to grant Bob one day off from work (on Christmas day); When he did he snapped "but I suppose you must be him all the more
