Internet Use among College Students: Impact on Social and Academic Aspect

Abstract Forty college students who stayed on campus in Coppin State University were interviewed in the school cafeteria, about their use of the Internet for the purpose of identifying how their Internet use has affected their social or academic lives. An average college student uses the internet about 100 minutes per day for school work and social networking such as face book. However, there are students who use the internet for the whole day. Introduction They basically use it for all the time they are awake and time allocated for their children. Approximately 10 percent of Internet-using students have used the Internet to the degree that their usage meets criteria that are parallel to those of other forms of dependence. Most dependents are males and are found in the hard science academic majors. Some ideas for dealing with this growing problem are suggested. This study was conducted to investigate various aspect of internet use by college students and the areas of their life that its affects. The motivation for this research was provided by the following case study. Names and other identification has been changed but the age and other demographics as not been changed. Other aspects of the case are accurate as described in the following case information. Case Study Deric, a 18 year old freshman started an interview at the counseling center of his college. This interview took place in the last week of April in his freshman year. He came to this institution, Coppin State University a college found in the centre of Baltimore Town. In his first semesters he made good academic progress, but he began to have academic difficulty in the second semester of his freshman year.
