Safety at CSUN Dear Officer Vanscoy, Imagine a student who carries an expensive laptop to school everyday. One particular week she has numerous tests and essays to complete. Instead of heading home after a long day of Friday classes, she heads to the dining hall and has a meal and does some work for a couple of hours. On the way to her car later that night, that expensive laptop catches the eye of a young gentleman, who continues to follow her to her car. Unfortunately this situation was a true scenario, but luckily, it didn’t go further than the student feeling very uncomfortable. Well, in a way they are in fact correct. According to the CSUN Schedule of Classes, the latest class on a Friday ends at 5:00 pm. However, for many weeks during the fall semester, it is in fact dark by 5:00, due to daylight savings. Then, there is the question of when it is not dark out. Well, there are many students that do not head straight home after classes end, like the student mentioned above. Some stay after to discuss things with classmates, speak with their professors in their office, study, or even grab a late meal. Also, during two weeks of every semester, Oviatt Library has extended hours to 11:00 pm, even on Fridays. The school clearly does not have an endless amount of funds to spend. It’s a good thing that this proposal only calls for three additional working hours for the employees and department. There is always the concern that not many students will use this service. To prevent the excess spending on something that it is not utilized, I would suggest that the department to employ five escorts on Friday nights. This would be a decrease from the ten that are available Monday through Thursday nights. If it is apparent that student activity is really slow, fewer escorts can be made available. To eliminate the service on Friday should not be an option. Revenue from parking can be used, or from the Associated Student’s budget, considering this proposal is crucial for the safety of the students of
