Evaluate the achievement goal theory and the need achievement theory of motivation in sports There are two theories that can explain the behavior and attitude of athletes in sports. One theory that explains the behavior and attitude of athletes is the need achievement theory of motivation in sports which states a link between the wish to achieve and success. It differentiates athletes by stating two types of achievers in sports; high and low achievers. Another theory that explains the behavior and attitude of athletes is the achievement goal theory of motivation in sports which is based on a social-cognitive approach to explain striving for competence. This theory differentiates athletes by the type of goals they have; the task-oriented goals (related to mastery) and ego-oriented goals (related to social comparison).

“Sports psychology can help athletes looking to improve their focus and confidence” (Smith and Kays). Needless to say, confidence and focus alone can completely change the outcome of an athlete’s performance. “The mental skills in excellent performance are not just a single purpose activity” (Smith and Kays). Elite athletes recognize the many factors that are involved in sports psychology. “Sports psychology ranges from detailed attention to perceptual processes, to mental skills training, and a broad investigation of perfectionism, injury and eating disorders” (Smith and Kays).
This personality trait would affect sporting performance if the performer was performing in a team game, the lack of confidence may put them off their game or they may not even get involved. Extroverts on the other hand tend to be confident and are most often found within team games, this trait can also lead to hot headedness and therefore deteriorate their performance in sport as they are no longer concentrated on the task at hand. This can also be said when they have to partake in a sport that involves small muscle movements (as extroverts tend to sway towards the use of large muscle movements) if they’re unable to perform the task at hand they may become aggressive and thus their performance will decrease. One further trait Eysenck indentified was a stable performer; a stable performer tends to be more laid back and has an even temper. In a performance situation this could lead to either laziness or complacency, with their mind wandering off task.

Sociology of sports looks at different groups of sports in society as a microcosm as a whole. Scientists are interested in the various relationships within the particular groups. For example, the relationships of players with various skill levels, players and their coaches, and players of different races. This is how scientists examine the structure and dynamics of a team and how these particular things make a difference in the sport itself (Brown, n.d.). These are not the only areas scientists examine; they also view the relationship of sports and society.
