With the undertaking of private health insurance in Australia, it is envisioned that this will alleviate the demand on the public surgical waiting times (Hanning.B, 2002, p. 64). Waiting for surgery can cause a great stress to the patient’s mental health, their quality of life and that of their families, ultimately limiting their independence. This issue is relevant in the lives of men and women, but with the effects of long waiting periods affecting them differently, as shown in a study by Bacharach-Lindström.M (2008).
