Analysis on The Port Huron Statement INTRODUCTION The Port Huron Statement is the manifesto of the American student movement Activist, Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) in 1962. It expanded rapidly in the sixtieth and their radical views influenced the development and social life formation in the country of the time. The SDS claims in The Port Huron Statement, as the Wikipedia entry notes, that “race and alienation were the two major flashpoints to exploit for their vision of a better America.” The Port Huron Statement states “As we grew, however, our comfort was penetrated by events too troubling to dismiss. First, the permeating and victimizing fact of human degradation, symbolized by the Southern struggle against racial bigotry, compelled most of us from silence to activism. Second, the enclosing fact of the Cold War, symbolized by the presence of the Bomb, brought awareness that we ourselves, and our friends, and millions of abstract "others" we knew more directly because of our common peril, might die at any time.
Bridging Essay #4 Kamila Podvisotskaya April 28, 2013 Throughout history, there has been a lot of influence of Islamic scientists on the rest of the world. Many contributions played a huge role in developing nations that are in our world today. Not only did the contributors play a huge role but a lot of new ideas opened up because of the many events occurring during the 11th century. Although, much perspective on the Islamic world was non-existent in earlier times, the world of Islam has carried out many developments and ideas including language, medicine, art, ideas, and technology to the Italian Renaissance. Two of the moment important developments that Islam brought out to the Italian Renaissance was the idea of knowledge and art.
Mazzini was a prolific publicist continually publishing letters and articles and was feted by many European liberals. Mazzini’s ideas encouraged several attempted invasions in the years 1833-48 and in 1849 Mazzini was able to take advantage of the Pope’s flight from Rome to declare a Roman Republic. This shows that Mazzini had a profound effect in accelerating the growth of autocracy and the nature of foreign intervention by exercising his opportunism in favourable conditions. He did so to cater to his own desires for a unified Italy and to fulfil the aims of Young Italy. Mazzini had
Union Station For the tour portion of my Research Assignment I decided to take a Los Angeles Conservancy tour of Union Station. With its grand opening in May of 1939, Union Station was originally known as the “Los Angeles Union Passenger Terminal”, was intended to serve as a consolidation of the two local railroad terminals and the railroads they had served with construction costs shared by these railroads. With Los Angeles in the midst of a population boom that began in the 1920s, the new station became a necessity. Shortly thereafter, WWII presented further opportunity for wide-scale use of the LAUS facilities for troop movement. As America's defense industries increased accordingly with the needs of the military, so did job opportunities in the Los Angeles area.
During the Great Depression of the 1930’s, Americans saw times tougher than they could have every imagined. When Roosevelt put forward his roadmap to get America financially and socially stable once more, the New Deal, Americans had seen an utopia—a world back to the normal, pre-depression status. Johnson’s Great Society plan came forth during a time of receding post-war prosperity and civil strife in America. The Great Society provided “liberty for all” and “a place where every child can find knowledge… where man can renew contact with nature” (doc. 4, 193).
The massive number of European immigrants that entered into America’s east coast from the late 1800’s and on forever influenced the growth and development of the country. Fleeing crop failure, famine, rising taxes, and land/job shortages, many immigrants journeyed to the United States because it was perceived as the land of economic opportunity. With hope for a brighter future, nearly 27 million immigrants arrived in the United States between 1880 and 1920. The majority of the immigrants entered through Ellis Island, leading it to become the gateway to America and become recognized as a national symbol. Many of the immigrants, not knowing the way America worked, didn’t stray too far from the East Coast and moved into areas filled with people of similar languages, traditions, and beliefs.

In 1941, the outbreak of Second World War started. The United States nation changed and went from peacetime to a time of conflict. So one can see that The Great Depression reached into every area of economic life, and thus into every area of social life as well for two main reasons. First, The Great Depression produced significant traditional values and goals. But most importantly, molded America into what we live in
The American renaissance of the early 19th century manifested itself in three forms: The second great awakening, the social reform movement, and literary romanticism. Discuss in some detail, the focus and activities of two of these areas of expression Between two of the major forms that many people focus on, in “the second Great awakening” and the “social reform” movement, many new ways and activities occurred during this time, almost a type of enlightenment, changing society completely. The Second Great Awakening had a tremendous effect on American society by spawning a large number of social reform movements; a great encourager of such reforms was the evangelist Charles G. Finney. Finney was to bring in new methods and a new attitude towards revival. Jonathan
The combined themes of national defense and international economic competition proved remarkably durable over time as reasons to expand the federal role in education. In 1958, Congress hurriedly approved the “emergency” National Defense Education Act (NDEA), which sent an unprecedented infusion of federal funds into the public schools. According to President Eisenhower, the United States needed to outdo its foe, the Soviet Union, “on the Communists’ own terms—outmatching them in military power, general technological advance, and specialized education and research.” 18 The NDEA, therefore, targeted these areas, shoring up the nation’s educational and research facilities, fostering technical development, and trying to improve students’ academic achievement levels. In particular, federal resources under the NDEA funded programs in science, mathematics, engineering, and foreign languages. (It is worth noting that legislation for such a program had been in process even before Sputnik; the satellite simply bolstered political support for existing science- and language-related initiatives and prompted Congress to act.)
