In this day and age, mass media is all over. Back in the 18th century, it took very little effort to have fun but in the world today, it is all about technologies and easy communication. The dictionary tells us that mass media is “ those means of communication that reach and influence large numbers of people”. In my opinion, mass media are the tools used to transmit mass communication, intended for a large audience. Mass media means tools such as television, radio, newspaper, Internet, magazines and et cetera. Mass media form our opinion, educate and entertain us. Mass media sources are there for us to learn the latest domestic or world news, getting information, to entertain or listen to the weather. Mass media, too, serve as public service announcement where the non-government agencies reaching out to the public of an event. With the presence of mass media, it is an advantage that information could be obtained easily. For instance, when driving, we usually turn on the radio to get the latest news and information. Radio entertains us with music and games as well. Besides, the World Wide Web today has millions of pages of articles so that research and study could be carried out effortlessly. The mass media plays a significant role in modern society. Basically, mass media shapes our lives, it makes us the way we are. Mass media has certain functions to our society, which include public opinion, surveillance, socialization, entertainment and so forth. Public opinion is the engine that keeps the wheels of a democracy turning. Although we elect officials to conduct our government, they are often restrained by the influence of the same public opinion that put them into office.
