By comparing the poems ‘My Last Duchess ‘and ‘Porphyria’s Lover’, both by Robert Browning the 19th Century Romantic poet, it is possible to explore their dramatic effectiveness and the different methods which are used by Browning to reveal character. In ‘Porphyria’s Lover’, the reader is given an insight into the warped mind of a controlling man who will kill in order to make his love last forever, whilst in ‘My Last Duchess’ the jealousy and the need for domination by the Duke is revealed. Both

Having recently compiled the melodrama entry for the planned Oxford Online Bibliography of Victorian Literature, I am acutely aware of the prolific expansion in melodrama studies that has taken place in the last decade alone. Before commencing work on the annotated melodrama bibliography, I was uncertain whether melodrama had yet yielded a rich enough critical field to qualify it as a ‘Level A’ ‘overview’ entry in OUP’s bibliographical schema, alongside topics
of strategies, including response logs, dialogue letters or journals, informal discussions at the end of the reading focus time, and book talks. Whatever the strategy used, students should be able to demonstrate comprehension, interpretation, and analysis upon the request of the teacher; acquisition of such skills should be charted on the Skills Index BLM.
