Despite popular belief, it wasn’t only the German military that had a nonsensical system, but the American military had a number of flaws as well. In Catch-22, this kind of mentality is shown in insane situations to create a unique perspective on World War II. Not only does the book create this perspective, but it creates the idea of a never-ending circle of repetitive contradictory actions that make it almost impossible not to conform.

Alex Rounds Swafford Pre-AP English 10 April 23, 2012 Tom Robinson’s Struggle with his Alienation Societal alienation is perhaps the cruelest way an individual or group can be treated by a community. When alienated, or alone and without any support, it is human nature for person a person to break down. In the American classic Too Kill a Mockinbird by Harper Lee, the character Tom Robinson struggles with this societal behavior ultimately leading to his downfall. He is an example of seclusion and shunning by society for the pure fact of being black. This alienation stems from untrue stereotypes and the disturbing moral values exhibited by the inhabitants of Maycomb.

To Kill A Mockingbird takes readers to the roots of human behavior (Lee). It portrays how unkind people of Maycomb County could be. It shows a time when being different made life more difficult than it had to be. It was a time when people did not accept differences. It especially shows cruelty against blacks, lawyers, and the poor.

In American society, the white Americans used the basis of race to arrange people into various levels of classes. “Race was a useful mechanism for determining who should have access to wealth, privilege, respect, loyalty, and power, and who should not” . Each class represented the ranks, status, and wealth of an individual in society. Obviously, the white race sat on top, receiving the highest amount of privileges such as voting rights and affluence while the rest were below receiving less than what the white race receives such as poor education, low-paid jobs, and poor living conditions.
