Life: Merely an Equation? Many people would consider judging people as a bad thing. So, why do some people get paid to do just that? Insurance companies judge how risky a person could be so they can estimate how much to charge them. Also, some people analyze how much value someone has. There have been many disputes on how people should value life. Some people say that life only has a monetary value. While other people might think that life should be valued by who the person is in terms of a human being. People should value life according to the impact a person has contributed to society. Valuing someone’s life shouldn’t be done in number and statistics, but rather the people that they touched while they were here on this earth. Everyone that has existed has made an impact on other people whether that person is the unborn baby, or the homeless person living in the park. So, when people say someone is worthless they aren’t considering the impact that person has made on the people around them. Before assigning value to life it should be considered what that person did in their lifetime not just their job, or their major achievements, but how they affected other people in either a positive or negative way. This is why suicide is such a selfish act. In Hamlet’s famous speech he states, “No traveler returns, puzzles the will, And makes us rather bear those ills we have Than to fly to others that we know not of” (Shakespeare 33)? In other words Hamlet believes that it might be better to live through the trials of life than journey into the unknown. Suicide is a permanent solution to temporary problems and when successful leaves behind a mass of grieving people. The person that committed suicide had an impact on the surrounding people. Putting a monetary value on life isn’t completely wrong, but it shouldn’t be the main focus. Insurance companies put a monetary value
