I don’t put value on materialistic items that a person has, I put value on the bonds one has with others or things/ activities. In Hamlets Soliloquy the biggest issue was Hamlet deciding whether or not he should get revenge on his father’s murderer. Its claim was pretty clear that life can be unfair, but I feel there was more to it that maybe I didn’t understand. The difference between Hamlet’s Soliloquy and the Human Life Calculator web page are the way they put value on a life. The soliloquy puts life’s value based on fairness of events that happen and the calculator puts life’s value based on dollar amount, “ For the purposes of this calculator, a human life only has economic value in its relation to other lives….”.
If I were terminally ill, I would not want to suffer just to suffer. What is the difference between having a patient, a human being, sedated until their death and a patient who commits suicide? It might sound a little cruel, but I personally don’t see what good a sedated patient does to society. I personally would not want to be in a vegetative state and have my family and friends witness me in that state. In addition, shouldn’t we choose how we would like to die just like we choose how we live?
It was a very unfortunate accident where everything that could go wrong went wrong and it ended up with a dead officer and a criminal that got to walk away with no punishment at all. However, in order to have a solution to this situation the police officers should have in my option the ethics of virtue. Ethics of virtue really focuses on character and doing the right thing. In saying that, if the police officers would have had ethics of virtue and been honest they would have gotten a legitimate warrant and even though it might not of saved the detectives life it would have put the drug dealer and killer in jail for a really long time and off the streets of
This is a major problem that we need to solve. The Bliss type of homeless should not be incorporated into the statistics we as a nation gather this is because they are not the true homeless people, they are the lazy and unmotivated people of society. They can choose to be houseless if they want to, but they should be excluded from any sort of statistic that we
Their destruction of the shelter is also a destruction of the friendship, with the Stockton family. Although a message is issued stating it was a false alarm, the damage is done and the true colors of friendship have been shown. Often people are put in the same situation, however not just choosing between people or things, but also peer pressure demands people to make important decisions. In “The Shelter” Dr. Stockton chooses what is most important to him, which was his family and true friends. In the end people will choose what is best for them rather than being pressured to go against their true
People often question how we should measure the value of life. Can life be calculated into dollars and cents? Should ones value be determined by their life’s accomplishments? Or does the value of one’s life depend solely upon how much that individual embraces and loves their existence? In my personal experience I have found the latter to be true.
Cultural relativism is the idea that the moral principles someone has are solely determined by the culture one lives in. These ideas seem to make sense because we as a culture understand that the judgments people make in a different culture will differ from ours whether we choose to support it or not. Our culture has different moral judgments as well and does not look at something like killing someone for stealing as morally right since our culture values human life above theft. Cultural relativism does not exist because some principles are universal and not relative only to culture. People also have the ability to think morally for themselves so morality is relative to someone’s point of view.
A Human Life Value Calculator establishes specific criteria for assigning monetary value to a person’s life. You might not fully agree or disagree with any of the texts’ essential claims about the value of life. This makes your voice an important contribution to this discussion about how we should value life. Where do your ideas fit into the terrain mapped by the other texts we have read? Is it right to assign dollar values to a person’s life?
Some norms are healthy and some are not necessary. Some contribute to the betterment of individuals, families, and communities; others can breed prejudice and prejudgment. Cultural norms often are so strongly rooted in an individual's daily life that they may not be aware of certain behaviors. Our identity and self-expression is molded by the social norms, so what happens when people want to express themselves against the norms? So I’m compelled to ask, tattoos, are they socially accepted?
And after you learn it, all other matters seem irrelevant. They just seem small… I can’t help feeling that my survival was more a matter of blind luck (10-12).” A best effort is the only tool that can lead to accomplishments in life inside a world that everything could be taken away unexpectedly at any moment. Simply, use the opportunities in life given because life is so dear and fragile. Although it is morally wrong to valuate a dollar amount on a person’s life, it is fair to asses one’s net financial contribution to their family. The Human Life Value Calculator on the Life website does exactly this by analyzing a specific individual’s basic information inputted into the calculator.
