By the second half of the book, I was no closer to finding out any of the questions that had at first drawn me to read on. I was no longer ‘curious’ but frustrated and distressed. I wanted to know the answers to why the governess is so suspicious of the
At first the poem doesn’t seem to have any of the traditional flow and rhymes at the end of the lines, but he does show internal rhyming within the lines. Stafford is a poet who does not follow traditional formatting within is work. The title of the poem is “Ask Me,” any reader may think “Ask Me what?” But the title speaks for itself as you read on. His poem at first is a little unclean on what is really being asked and to whom. The first line says “Some time when the river is ice ask me mistakes I have made” (Stafford).
Post Card Peter Skrzynecki’s Post Card develops the notion of belonging by the persona’s inevitable connection to cultural heritage despite his unwillingness to accept it –“haunts me since its arrival”. Initially, the perspective feels a lack of connection towards the post card, distancing him from it. However, it is ambiguous by the end of the poem whether he will strive to reconcile with the place, “Warsaw”, as indicated in the beginning “A post card sent by a friend, haunts me, since its arrival”. Through this, it is evident that Skrzynecki is deeply afraid of what awaits within the post card but at the same time willing to establish an affiliation as he recognises it. Skrzynecki at first has a different acknowledgement to the post card to the response that he imagines his parents will have.
By not mentioning it he builds tension as we are expected to be told of his experience and while we wait the tension builds. By the end of the first chapter we are left wanting to know more ,as he tells us nothing about the experience apart from the fact that it is dark. A foreboding atmosphere is set when Arthur refers to the incident as quite a sinister one as he compares it to “mortal dread and terror of spirit”. Yet still not revealing what the incident actually is. With the knowledge of it being quite a terrifying one we know that when he tells his story we should be expecting something which is grim as ,even he himself says “my peace of mind was about to be disturbed” .
This is further exaggerated as Thomas only has very little dialogue in the poem, of which he repeats Maude Clare’s name and “hid his face”, however this is after attempting to “match her scorn with scorn”, so by having Thomas hide his face Rossetti is portraying him as weak, and unable to stand up for himself against such a strong character in the poem. By having him only say Maude Clare’s name and not his new bride it may suggest to the reader that she is the only thing he thinks of, and she is always on his mind. This is supported as the unnamed narrator outlines Thomas’ actions towards Maude Clare; “My lord gazed long on pale Maude Clare”, indicating that the gingering looks may show that even though he is very newlywed he is already looking at other women. Implying that this relationship is tainted by the presence of Maude Clare. However in contrast to Thomas’ very little dialogue, Nell is given more of a voice.
Throughout the poem Prufrock expresses his ideas about dull, uneventful, and mediocre life. He wants to take a chance and make progress but he is too scared to make a fool of himself. His anxieties and obsession with making a fool of himself have isolated him from the world leaving him to feel disillusional. For example Prufrock says “And indeed there will be time to wonder, “Do I dare?” and ,”Do I dare?” time turn back and descend the
Even when I looked around people were leaving the reading because of the uncomfortable atmosphere. However, just because the environment was far more satisfying at Freeman’s reading I just simply could not get engaged in her performance. There was something lacking in the way that she presented her poems. I would rather have stood in the hot recital hall and listen to Tim Seible over and over again than listen to Freeman’s reading one more time. Also, Freeman seemed hesitant to take questions after her reading was over.
These Proverbs were never put in any logical order because it would have been a difficult task. Although antithetical parallelism is the dominant form which is a literary device used in Hebrew poetry in which it consists of pairs, triplets of lines that are closely related with one another but other forms were also used. Some examples of these are: A wise child makes a glad father, but a foolish child is a mother’s grief. It is better to be of a lowly spirit among the poor, than to divide the spoil among the proud. This book also contained individual one-line (Hebrew) sayings as
5. Coleridge doesn’t have the mariner tell his tale straight through because he wants to assure the readers that the mariner is alive and not a ghost. 6. To my understanding of the poem, the glosses are some what important because it helped me to understand the poem. This mean Coleridge wasn’t successful.
He does this by figuratively showing what you can do with poems. In text two the writers show why poems are no longer a popular reading piece. Because of the subtle information and therefore hard to see, people don’t follow the reading itself. Structure in both texts one and two differ. Where in text one it is a poem explaining
