The Tricare Experience

Have you ever wondered how military members and their dependents rely on Tricare? During my time in Naples, Naval Hospital, Italy, I gained much knowledge on this subject. I worked as Hospital Corpsman in the United States Navy, rendering care for military members and their dependents. My experience working in this naval hospital was both challenging and rewarding, to the military community.

During my time in Naples Naval Hospital, I worked in the Emergency Room and Family Practice department. I worked under the direct supervision of physicians such as doctors and nurses. This hospital has numerous patients from various military branches, such as Marines, Soldiers, and Airmen. I aquired much knowledge about the various Tricare health plans, while interacting with patients. Many of these service members are active duty and eligible for Tricare Prime (Tricareforu, 2013). Tricare Prime works like a Health Mantaince Organization, that has three additional options (Tricareforu, 2013).These service members are referred to as beneficiaries or sponsors by their option plan (Allen, Braceland, Rollins, & Susan, 2013). While working there, I was able to ask other staff members questions. My coworker Rodriguez, provided knowledgeable facts about Tricare Prime. He explained not having to pay any annual deductibles, or annual enrollment fees. He explained paying no costs for civilian inpatient care. He also stated paying no costs for an inpatient behavioral health admission. He explained that with Tricare Prime,a service member has no charge per diem. Patients don’t pay for an admission, while staying at civilian inpatient nursing facility. Petty Officer Rodriguez plans to leave the Navy, within the end of his active duty contract. He
