The Music Teacher essay. John cheever, ”The Music Teacher” Seton is frustrated about all the problems in his and Jessica’s marriage. Seton desperately tries to fix the marriage, he also tries to seek the acceptance of his friends. Mostly he wants to fix the marriage, by seeking help, at miss Deming where he is taking piano lessons. One of the things that indicates, there are problems in the marriage is in the start of the short story, when Seton comes home, probably from work. Then he walks into the living room, and meets Jessica and the kids. (P 530 l. 10 – 17) It symbolizes that there are problems, it is pretty obviously, that Jessica needs Seton to help more at the house, but Seton can’t believe that the house is in such disorder. He can’t see that what they need his help; he thinks that it is just something they have arranged. (P 530 l. – 25 – page 531 l. 2.) Jessica is clearly mad at Seton, she refuses his kiss and she uses the excuse that she has a cold. The burned food also symbolizes that there is a problem. (P 531 l, 9 -12) Before the marriage was with wit and passion That means that the marriage was perfect but now it is dark. They have been married for 10 years, and most of the years the marriage where very good. But in the last to years everything just went bad. Like it says in the text, Jessica is not only burning the food some times, it is every time. Jessica tries to show Seton, that there is something wrong here; by burning the food and that she refuses to kiss him back when he tries to kiss her. First time Seton tries to fix his marriage, is when he invites Jessica to dinner, in a restaurant that they haven’t been to in a long time. They actually used to dining there, but that is also ruined now. This symbolizes that Seton is trying to save his marriage.
