“the God of Wine and Parties” Dionysus

342 Words2 Pages
Dionysus is the son of Zeus and Semele and he is the only god to have mortal parent. Zeus came to Semele in the middle of the night and Semele was happy to be the lover of a god. When Hera found out about Zues and Semele , Hera approached Semele and convinced Semele that she should get Zeus to show her his true image. She did so and when he appeared as himself she was instantly burnt to ashes. Zeus was able to save Dionysus and attached him to his thigh until he was ready to be born. When he was born from the body of the god he was given immortality since he was born directly from a god. Dionysus is the god of productiveness, parties, and wine. He is essential in the growth of plants. He has a duel personality. He brings joy to everyone but also going into fits of rage. He granted Midas the power to turn whatever he touched into gold then took the power back when it proved problematic. Both mirrored the nature of wine. He is also the only god that is able to bring someone back from the underworld. He defeated Thanatos and brought his mother from the underworld back to Mount Olympus. Dionysus is probably the most important god in our everyday life. He is associated with rebirth after death like from when he was ripped apart by the Titans and resurrected by Rhea, mother of gods. This is symbolically shown by the nurturing of vines, where the vines must be trimmed back, and then be left alone in winter for them to grow different fruit. The other is the idea that when being influenced by wine, one was able to feel Dionysus as if they were being possessed. Dionysus was not only outside his believers but also in them as they drunk more and more wine. When someone feels as if Dionysus possesses them, they become more brave and might find himself doing things he otherwise would not. By Logan Kurtz,
