The European part being mainly the melodies and harmony of the Andalucia region of Spain (the homeland of the Conquistadors), while the African part in Salsa is mainly from the western coast of Africa where the slave trade was most prevalent.” ("Justsalsa.com," n.d, p. 1) It is said that “Between 1930 and 1960 there were musicians from Cuba, Puerto Rico, Mexico and South America coming to New York to perform. They brought their own native rhythms and musical forms with them, but as they listened to each other and played music together, the musical influences mixed, fused and evolved.” (latinmusic.about.com, Lilich, n.d, p. 1) “This type of musical hybridization gave birth to the 1950s creation of the mambo from son, conjunto and jazz traditions. Continuing musical fusion went on to include what we know today as the cha cha cha, rhumba, conga and, in the 1960s, salsa.” (latinmusic.about.com, Lilich, n.d, p. 1) The type of instruments used in salsa music is what makes salsa music so unique. Salsa music has a heavy use of percussion (clave, maracas, conga, bongo, tambora, bato, cowbell.) Other salsa instruments include
Originally, danzon orchestras consisted of e typical orchestra instruments. Later, danzon bands were downsized to smaller charangas, that eventually would add congo drums to their ensemble. In 1938, Orestes Lopez and Cacharo Lopez, considered the “inventors of mambo,” wrote the song Mambo, which was a danzon, but also included rhythms from African folk music. This afro-cubanism mash up would be different from the typical danzon and so, the mambo was born. Mambo included very little vocal sections, if any, but was primarily instrumental dance music.
On the streets, in dance halls, and in Storyville cabarets like The Big 25 and Pete Lala’s, Freddy Keppard and King Oliver experimented with music so new, it didn’t even have a name. New Orleans, the devastated but recovering city, forever will be associated with the birth of jazz music, the first original art form developed in the United States, which went on to spread across the continent and around the globe during the 20th century. 3. Briana Period 5 Beowulf Essay The Great and Mighty Beowulf sailed his way to Hrothgar’s kingdom to help fight off vengeful beast terrorizing his kingdom, little did he know of the adventures ahead of him. Each battle he fought glorified his strength and being. For Beowulf opening up one door always meant a new quest. From dragons to sea witches Beowulf’s fought for the greater good of his people. Through out his battles the great and mighty Beowulf not only grew physically, but at mind as well.
Everybody loves and respects Beowulf, and as a result of his accomplishment, he has been “granted a new glory” (Line 819). Along with Beowulf’s first achievement, this poem also cites Beowulf’s final death. This gloomy period results from Beowulf’s naïve decision to fight a powerful dragon at a very old age. Although Beowulf does in fact kill the dragon, “The wound/ In his neck began to swell and grow;/ He could feel something stirring, burning/ In his veins, a stinging venom” left by the dragons fangs (Lines 2711-2714). Hispaniola: A Tale of Two Countries T. Laman November 15, 1999 At the mere mention of the word Haiti, images of the “boat people” immediately come to mind. Because it was not so long ago that the newspapers and television stories captured the saga of hundreds of desperate people fleeing this very poor nation in shoddy boats and attempting to make the perilous journey to Miami and economic liberty. Haiti is a country on the western third of the island of Hispaniola, which it shares with the Dominican Republic. Why did the Haitians become “boat people” and the Dominicans did not? Why are the Haitians so much poorer than the Dominicans?
In the epic Beowulf, the protagonist, Beowulf, faces three different monsters. Much like Beowulf we each have our monsters that we face and it is up to us to decide whether to stand up or cower away. After being terrorized for so long, king Hrothgar and his people and his people the Danes, are in need of a hero to vanquish their curse, which is Grendel. In the epic, Grendel is the first monster Beowulf has to fight. This monster attacks at night, usually after people are “sprawled in sleep” for a quick and effective kill (Beowulf 33).
