Frederick Douglas also proved that sticking up for himself helped himself out. Douglas proved this in the story when Douglas defends himself when Mr. Covey tries to hurt him. “At this moment from whence came the spirit I don’t know I resolved to fight.” (Douglas, 569) This quote explains how Douglas suddenly gained the courage out of nowhere to finally defend himself from Mr.
A hero in an epic poem is typically an important figure in a legend or history that holds some type of royalty and embarks on a cyclical adventure or quest. On this adventure the hero faces many adversities and obstacles but eventually returns home significantly changed from the journey. These heroes embody bravery, intelligence and loyalty as well as fear that they must overcome in order to protect their family, friends and countries. Two of the most famous epic heroes are Gilgamesh and Odysseus who both have to overcome great difficulty in order to protect their people of their countries as well as their family and friends. Gilgamesh was a famous epic hero for various different reasons.
In stories, the protagonist is always the interesting one who saves people. In “The Odyssey” by Homer the hero, Odysseus, makes this story very interesting to read. Odysseus has remarkable qualities that show the reader at the beginning of the story that he is the protagonist through analyzing his personality. Odysseus is a strong, courageous leader and his intelligence always gets him closer and closer to his goal. Odysseus’s strong leadership play’s a huge role in the issues that face him on his journey home to Ithaca.
Sometimes there are hurdles in life that require great courage to overcome. We must utilize our inner strengths to motivate these courageous actions. Loren Eiseley sets an example of this in The Running Man- a chapter from his autobiography, All the Strange Hours. In this essay he reveals memories that show his lonely childhood which gives him the courage to overcome his problems. Loneliness is what ultimately sparks his courageous action later on in his life.
The Odyssey The Odyssey is an epic poem about spiritual journey and how it can bring out the hero in people, and if they are true to themselves, they will always pull through. Odysseus is put through so much struggle and pain, but in the long run it actually ends up helping him become mentally and physically tough by testing his faith in his skills. The King of Ithaca finds himself in many great challenges where he proves to everyone around him, along with himself, that he has found his true identity. Odysseus has always been an honorable and respected man in his small kingdom, and many citizens are starting to see the number of capabilities he has, along with something inside of him that not even Odysseus knows he has. For instance, Odysseus remains strong for his crew, even in the toughest situations, like keeping his men under control while they are crossing paths with Scylla, so the adventurers have some kind of stability.
It means that one has to use action to get through one’s life struggles and learn from them, the actions one takes can make you wise. “But the struggles make you stronger and the changes make you wise” (Gary Allen). When life is a rough, when it has its struggles one learns from the troubles in life and makes one’s life better. Both the song and this quote have similar meanings. They both describe how one goes through life learning from life’s struggles.

Although, epic heroes are created to be a personification of perfection, they also have flaws. These flaws can be used against them by their enemies or even themselves. An essential part of becoming an epic hero is over conquering those flaws or learning to work with them. The two texts that we read contained to easily distinguishable epic heroes.
The Anglo-Saxons believed that he had superhuman strength. Having superhuman strength is a major part of Beowulf characteristics for it was what set him apart from others throughout the poem. “Hands that moved thirty men’s strength,” Beowulf was praised for his strength. With his strength Beowulf is able to over come many obstacles that he encounters. Beowulf firsts shows this when he defeats Grendel in Herot, for the ring-giver Hrothgar in behalf of his king Higlac.

Power is a very strong word in the world around us. Since the beginning of mankind the desire for power has always been present in our world, because that’s what the man wants the most. People do the most terrible and the greatest things, while having this desire, and it seems like there are no boundaries. Power can make a man kill, but can also make him do the best heroic deeds. There is no end to that desire, because you always need more.
