Lost Opportunities of Young Somali Immigrants Human life is valuable in itself, whether it is the life of an infant, elderly or a young person. Though painful, death is a natural process that every living soul has to experience. The tragedy is when it happens in a very unnatural way. The death of a young person in an untimely manner is not good. According to the Somali local sources such as “www.shabelle.net and www.hiiraan.com “ the research indicates that What is worse than that is when that young individual takes his own life and the life of others as well. According to United Nations of high commissioner updates on “www.unhcr.org”, The United States has now the largest number of Somalis outside of East Africa, which is estimated to be around five hundred thousand, and most definitely growing. The State of Minnesota has welcomed a very large number of Somali refugees in the US. May be it is because of the 'Minnesota Nice' slogan that they might have heard back in the refugee camps in East Africa or in the slums of East Leigh in Nairobi, Kenya. Minnesota is the destination for every Somali family or individual. The Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, in particular, have become a "magnet" for all the Somalis in the state. Whatever attributes this state and its cities may have, Somalis seem to flock here, even the sub-zero temperatures do not seem to deter them. It is a well-known fact that the people of this great state are very friendly and have welcomed the new Somali immigrants, as they have welcomed the Southeast Asian refugees before them and most probably the European immigrants in earlier centuries. Young males under the age of thirty-five, in particular, are the most affected. Somali students on college campuses feel that they are treated differently than their other African brethren. On a personal level, I have not experienced any of the things other students talk about, but I do sympathize with them. Some say that even if they do everything right, they are still harassed by law enforcement officers on campuses. Few of them talk about surprise visits they had from the FBI and the Department of Justice investigating officers. One of my friends even quit going to the mosque altogether for fear of being labeled Al-Shabab member. Young Somalis of any age cannot travel outside the United States. It is a very sad predicament to be in, but that is the way Somali youngsters feel about where things stand now. However, I do strongly believe that all hope is not lost and a bright future awaits those youngsters, who take advantage of the opportunities available here in the.
