PI AM SAM - All You Need is Love Introduction The main theme of the movie, I Am Sam, is the love. By using the importance of love over anything else, this demonstrates the ability to being a parent even though with a mental disability. For an example: the scene when Sam’s daughter, Lucy is asked “she needs more than what her father can give her.” Lucy’s reply to this is that ”All you need is love”. This movie uses the view of medical model and social model. Even though Sam cannot recover from the presence of his medical disability, he is able to overcome the some impact of the disability. He is identified as an asset to society and a positive, loving and caring father for his daughter through social model not his medical model. The movie determines that the social model is the best way to view people with disability, by using the social model as a tool to solve the conflict of Sam’s right to guardianship over his daughter. Every society has negative and positive attitudes toward to individual with disabilities. However, still we often see more negative attitudes because still society sees PWD through medical model. The movie gives an accurate picture that we often see attitudes towards people with disability in the legal and social service systems. It is also explores deeply what it means to be a “good” parent and an authentic human being. Representation of disability Sam is mentally retarded adult who grew up in an institute when he was small. He is well-adjusted to his disability and has a fairly normal life. However, there are some of the disability stereotypes are present in this movie: his goofy clothes, bizarre laugh, mannerisms and speech patterns leave no doubt that Sam is "severely disabled". It shows Sam's frustration at not understanding the world around him, his difficulty pulling out the salient features when telling his story, his rigidity
